Deep Tissue Massage Techniques

Deep Tissue Massage Techniques

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that basically aims at the deeper muscles or connective tissues of the body, in order to provide relief to chronic muscle tension. This massage therapy usually uses the same strokes that are used in classic massage therapy, but the strokes are much slower and deeper. This is the reason why deep tissue massage therapy can relieve the tension of the deeper muscles, connective tissue and fascia. This massage therapy is usually recommended for chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and injury caused by repetitive strain.

Deep Tissue Massage

There are several types of deep tissue massage techniques, out of which one technique closely resembles the classic massage therapy, except for the fact that the strokes are applied slowly and deeply. In general, all deep tissue massage techniques rely on long and flowing strokes to relieve tension and stiffness of muscles. This can however, make the entire procedure quite time consuming. In this technique, the areas with more tension and pain are given more importance, by applying deeper pressure on them.

The second type of deep tissue massage technique involves the use of elbows and fingers, in order to give a deeply penetrating massage to the sore muscles. This method is especially effective in relieving muscle stiffness. Apart from these two techniques, deep tissue massage can use penetrating tools like, ceramic, glass and wooden props at times. Such tools are mainly used to enhance the effects or the efficacy of the massage therapy.

Deep Tissue Massage Benefits

When muscles of our body gets injured or stressed, there is a possibility of adhesion in the muscles, ligaments, as well as tendons. Such adhesions can impair blood circulation, and normal supply of oxygen to the area, leading to pain and inflammation. Such a condition can cause accumulation of toxins within the muscle tissues. Deep tissue massage can help to break down the adhesions, which will loosen the muscles and ensure normal circulation. This in turn, would help to release the accumulated toxins within the tissues, and thereby, help to reduce pain and inflammation. Deep tissue massage has also been found to be very helpful for correcting the alignment of muscles and connective tissues.
